Custom Freestanding Cabinetry
Unlike most production cabinet shops, I build all of my own doors and drawers from the same lumber selection as the rest of the cabinet, rather than outsourcing.
Drawers are dovetailed at all four corners, and dovetails are always cut by hand, because to me it looks better, and I enjoy the tradition and use of hand tools wherever possible. Wood drawer glides with careful tolerances are standard, but high-quality undermount, soft-closing glides can be used as well..
Here’s a collection of hutches, armoires, credenzas and other cabinets that I’ve designed and built since around 2013. These are individually designed commissions for local customers, according to specific dimensions, drawer and door configurations and other requirements.
All of these are made from 100% solid hardwoods, and occasional softwoods such as vertical grain Douglas fir, from local suppliers. Lumber is carefully selected by me personally, for beauty and stability, and to meet the preferences of each client.
I commonly work with cherry, quarter-sawn white oak, sapele, maple, curly maple, walnut, Douglas fir and redwood. Reclaimed lumber of various kinds, selected specifically for your project, is always an option as well.
Wood joinery is central to the structural quality of this kind of work. Parts are joined using old and proven methods like mortise and tenons, dados and dovetails. Combined with high quality modern glues, these joints are virtually indestructible. Fasteners like nails and screws are rarely used, if at all.
Seasonal wood movement is a constant consideration throughout the design process and in the types of joints used, so that the finished piece can expand and contract freely with changing environments and seasons.
