This 450 square foot, two-level deck in the Land Park neighborhood of Sacramento, was completed in September of 2020. The decking material is thermally modified ash - solid ash lumber that has been heated in a special drying process that changes its chemical structure, and darkens it all the way through.

This process also makes the lumber extremely stable and resilient, with no stain or sealer. I revisited this deck a couple years after I built it, to do other work on the house. It still looked brand new, other than slight graying by UV exposure, which was expected and desired. None of the miters or other joints had opened or moved at all, and no noticeable shrinkage anywhere.

We chose to use a hidden fastener system, eliminating visible surface screws, for both the decking and the cladding that encloses the storage area under the raised section. The hidden fasteners and decking were both supplied by Thermory USA. The stainless steel cable rail system was supplied by AGS Stainless.
